![]() ![]() The end-game deep biomes are just as huge and empty as the overland areas. There is an alien gateway shortcut in one of these overland sections that literally takes longer to utilize than just walking to the end destination - what?!ĭon't worry though - large, useless areas aren't just limited to the land. They are large seemingly for the sole purpose of being time-consuming and confusing to navigate that's the challenge. The two overland areas essentially serve to be as annoying as possible to get all the way through, just to grab the one thing you need and never return. Large Areas - While many of the new biomes are great (Twisty Bridges, Lily Pads), there are some infuriatingly large, empty areas that the game forces you to slog through. ![]() I don't even know the name of the protagonist from the original game, but after a few of these conversations I thank him wholeheartedly for keeping his mouth shut throughout the first adventure. Robin is a whiny, jaded know-it-all, and her conversations with Alan sound like something out of an undergrad philosophy dormitory common room. I completely understand Alterra's decision to stick all of these people together out in the middle of icy nowhere. The writing is absolutely awful, and I felt embarrassed for the voice actors every time I listened to a recording. This wouldn't be an issue if the characters weren't all unlikable, childish, one-dimensional caricatures. Characters - one of the biggest changes from the original is greater focus on characters and dialogue. As a result, there's no real order in which you gather blueprints and experience events, and it makes the whole experience very disjointed.Ģ. The depth mechanic that facilitated progression in the first game is pretty much non-existent in Below Zero you can comfortably navigate about 80% of the (meaningful) map with a basic Seatruck, Seaglide, and Oxygen plants. This phenomenon continued throughout the game, and I often felt simultaneously over and under geared. I don't think I even had a Seaglide yet, let alone a builder tool. Maybe twenty minutes into my run, I had found Outpost Zero and scanned several blueprints that would be considered mid-late game in the original Subnautica. Progression - Progression in Below Zero is completely uneven. ![]() After finishing (not completing, but decidedly not returning to) my second play through, I can safely say that I get it now.ġ. I had remembered fans of the first game having disliked Below Zero and didn't really understand all the hate the first time I played the game through. Having played through the first game multiple times, I decided to return to Below Zero again. ![]()
